Windows 8.1 Vs Windows 8, what's New?

Windows 8.1 is an update to the tiled operating system aiming to fix many of the perceived wrongs of the first version and introduce some very welcome new features. Compared to Window 8, Windows 8.1 introduced a series of subtle changes.

  • 1. Booting to desktop: bypass Microsoft's tiled Start screen and boot directly to the desktop.
  • 2. Default apps: set default apps for things like the Web browser, e-mail client, music player etc.
  • 3. Start button: return the Start button to the desktop for easy restarting or turning off the computer.
  • 4. Hot Corners: have the option to disable corners directly into the operating system which need to do with third-party alternatives in Windows 8.
  • 5. Taking up less space: Although Windows 8.1 introduces many new features, it's actually less of a storage hog than Windows 8
  • 6. Better Multi-Tasking: Windows 8.1 has the ability to have multiple app screens open simultaneously and you can resize the smaller window to virtually any size with just a finger swipe.
  • 7. Dynamic Lock Screen: The lock screen on a Windows 8.1 doesn't have to be a static image anymore. It can play a slideshow now, which can pull photos from various folders including whatever you've got in SkyDrive.
  • 8. App updates: the ability for apps to automatically update.
  • 9. Organizing the home screen.
  • 10. Supercharged Search

Should I Update to Windows 8.1?

As a Windows OS with so many new features, Windows 8.1 is really attractive. But should I update to Windows 8.1 immediately? Here I have some advices for you.

For current Windows 8 users, you can upgrade to Windows 8.1 as soon as possible because the update is free and largely seamless, and adds some useful new tweaks and features.

For current Windows 7 users, you can keep your Windows 7 until it's time for a new PC because Windows 7 still works well with all sorts of applications and designed for both PCs and touch-screen devices, those touch-optimized Windows 8 and 8.1 elements won't do much for you anyway.

For current Windows XP users, you can consider to update Windows XP to Windows 8.1 as the "retirement" of Windows XP is approaching (no more security-based updates, no more bug fixes, and no more service packs). And Windows 8.1 is Microsoft's PC operating system now, you'll probably have to get used to it eventually.

After talking so much, now you can make you own decide to whether upgrade to Windows 8.1 or not.
